💋 When All Else Fails, Just Write the Kiss

Ever wonder what happens when an author sits down to write a big, dramatic scene…and totally blanks? Like, the “what happens next” part just disappears into the void?

Yeah. That’s me. Regularly.

My characters are mid-scene, everything’s building—and suddenly I’m staring at the screen like it's written in another language. Plot? Emotion? Coherent decision-making? No clue. My brain decides now is the perfect time to question everything.

And so… I write the kiss.

🧠 My Secret Writing Hack (That I Probably Shouldn’t Admit)

When I get stuck in a scene—when I don’t know whether my characters should fight, flee, spill secrets, or start a fire—I skip ahead and write the kiss.

Even if it doesn’t belong there.

Even if it’s totally the wrong moment.

Even if the characters are mid-argument and one of them is technically supposed to be angry.

I write the swoony, slow-burn, tension-filled moment that I’ve been imagining since chapter one. Because it helps. It reminds me why I love these characters—why they matter. It’s like a little pep talk in the form of a smooch.

🤷‍♀️ Will That Scene Actually Stay in the Book?

Sometimes.

Other times, not even close.

But whether it makes it to the final draft or not, writing that moment helps me get unstuck. It clears the fog. It brings back the spark. And honestly? It’s fun. And in the middle of writing suspense, danger, and emotional chaos, sometimes a little romance is exactly what the author needs.

So, if you’re ever reading one of my books and the kiss scene feels extra earned, just know: I probably wrote it way too early, in total desperation, with coffee in one hand and a very concerned dog or two staring at me from the floor.

And maybe, just maybe, that kiss helped everything else fall into place.
